THHSMUN and RSMISMUN are proud in supporting Laura’s House as our conference charity for our eighth session of IIMUN. Please consider donating any amount in marked containers found in your committee on the day of the conference to help us raise $200 towards Laura’s House.
In MUN, we have been able to empower ourselves and the world around us by constantly gaining knowledge about the issues that present themselves within our community. As we have read up on topics far and wide, we have been able to think of creative solutions to problems such as deforestation, ending civil wars, and providing education to children in need. Rarely, however, have we gotten an opportunity to extend the knowledge we gain through direct action. And at our conference, we are hoping to change that.
Family violence costs the nation from $5 to $10 billion annually in medical expenses, police and court costs, shelters and foster care, sick leave, absenteeism and non-productivity. And often, with the stigma and violence surrounding being a victim of domestic abuse beyond the physical sense, families, partners, mothers, and children are afraid to speak out or seek out help.
Laura’s House provides domestic-violence related services to women and children, ranging from education and counseling to emergency shelter and support. Founded in 1994, this shelter serves to provide a viable means for peoples who have been affected by domestic violence and have allowed for nearly 4,000 women and children to regain their livelihoods and freedoms from their previous abusive relationships. As the only state-approved comprehensive domestic violence agency in South Orange County, Laura’s House has responded to the ever-present situation by developing innovative outreach and residential programs that meet the unique needs of diverse population groups, each coping with the effects of domestic violence.
With our theme this year being “The Future is in Our Hands”, we have chosen to partner with Laura’s House this year in order to provide a pathway for others to reclaim their futures. With a goal to improve the livelihoods in our community and an impacted population within Orange County, you can make a direct impact at our conference by donating to the marked boxes in each committee room. Remember, if you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, please contact (714) 992-1931 or visit the Laura’s House website at https://www.laurashouse.org/. Thank you advisors and delegates for your continued support of these causes.
